Andie was still chuckling over Valentina’s response to her final joke as she searched the kitchen for a knife to crack the seals on the boxes. There was something so satisfying about teasing the buxom Italian woman, who had the capacity to be as feisty and fiery as any of her fellow countrywomen, and yet had trained herself so thoroughly over the years to keep herself in check. It wasn’t fair. A woman like Valentina deserved to be herself without apology. Every time she got her reserve to crack, even a little, Andie counted it as a victory. Given a few hours alone in the bedroom on Saturday night, Andie had every intention of breaking her shell wide open so that Valentina would never want to hide inside it again. With any luck, it would be accompanied by Valentina shouting out a long string of very dirty sounding Italian words.

With that happy thought, she began to unpack, and was still at it a few hours later when her phone rang. The number displayed on the caller ID had a New York City area code, but it was unfamiliar to Andie and dampened her mood. Remembering the scandal that had sent her into exile, she answered with a cautious hello.

“Andie Bartlett? This is Jessica Balderelli.”

Andie’s mouth dropped open as she recognized the caller’s voice, the same one that had announced her win and changed her life scarcely a year before. “Jessica? I, uh. I wasn’t expecting…”

“No, I’m sure you weren’t. After all, no matter what anyone’s saying, it’s not like you and I have ever really spoken before.”

“No, we haven’t. What can I do for you, Miss Balderelli?” Andie inquired, remembering her manners.

“You might as well stick with Jessica, all things considered. The fact is, I felt I needed to apologize.”

“No, there’s no need,” Andie hastened to assure her. “This is Duncan King’s doing, not yours.”

Jessica let out a humorless laugh that indicated she was in agreement. “Well, not apologize, exactly. But it is because of me that you’re in a bad position. It’s unconscionable that the network is even considering cutting your show.”

Andie’s blood ran cold, an icy lump settling in her stomach. She’d believed Tracy when she said her show was in the clear, but she saw now that it had been foolishly optimistic of her not to question it. It’s not that she thought it was a lie, but as her assistant, Tracy had a vested interest in keeping her calm and focused on her work. On the other hand, if the no-nonsense judge said there was a chance that her career was in danger, Andie would be crazy not to heed the warning. “Please tell me, what do I need to do?”

“Look, nothing’s decided, and as repulsive as I find it, I’m urging the network execs to give Duncan what he wants to make this all go away.”

“And what is that?”

“He wants what you have. The show, the book deal, the star treatment.”

“And the network doesn’t need both of us.
